Chatbot Welcome Messages

A welcome message should help someone ask their question. Say what the chatbot can help with, then leave room for the visitor to get on with it.

A welcome message should help someone ask their question. Say what the chatbot can help with, then leave room for the visitor to get on with it.

Fictional examples to adapt. The questions below are sample wording.

Start with the page they’re on

Product page

Help with the decision in front of them

OPENING

Hi, I’m the website assistant. I can help with sizing, materials and delivery information for this product. What would you like to check?

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

Are you checking the size or how it fits?

Use the page context to narrow the offer. Ask the follow-up only when the visitor’s question leaves that distinction unclear.

Pricing page

Explain plans without promising a deal

OPENING

I’m the website assistant. I can explain what’s included in each plan and where the published prices differ. What are you comparing?

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

Which plans are you looking at?

Keep discounts, exceptions and custom quotes with the team that can approve them. Don’t imply that the chatbot can negotiate.

Help centre

Give the visitor a useful starting point

OPENING

Hi, I’m the help assistant. I can help you find setup instructions and troubleshooting steps. What are you trying to do?

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

What happens when you try that step?

A short description is often enough to start. Don’t ask for a full diagnostic report before you know what the problem is.

Delivery and returns

Separate policies from order access

OPENING

I’m the website assistant. I can explain delivery and return policies. For a specific order, use the order-support link on this page. What would you like to know?

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

Is this about the return policy or an order you’ve already placed?

This example assumes the chatbot cannot access orders. Mention order lookup only when that access actually exists, and use the proper account flow.

Booking page

Help them prepare without claiming a booking

OPENING

Hi, I’m the website assistant. I can explain the appointment types and what to prepare. Use the booking form to see available times and confirm an appointment. What would help you choose?

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

Are you choosing an appointment type or checking what to bring?

Use this wording when availability and confirmation live in a separate booking system. A helpful answer is not a booking confirmation.

Requests for a person

Make the handoff easy to understand

OPENING

I’m the website assistant. I can help with general questions. If you need someone to review your account or make a decision, use the contact link on this page.

IF YOU NEED TO CLARIFY

Would you like help finding the right contact route?

Point to a real, monitored route. Say the message has been sent only after a connected handoff system confirms it.

Read it beside the actual setup

Name the role

“Website assistant” or “help assistant” is usually clearer than a made-up person’s name. Let visitors know they’re talking to a chatbot.

Match the actual access

Read the opening beside the chatbot’s permissions. Remove any offer it cannot fulfil, including checking orders, booking times or sending messages.

Let the visitor answer

Avoid a long menu of capabilities. Ask a short question, then clarify what is missing. Don’t make them repeat information the page already gives you.

Make the wording fit your website

The text collection includes these examples, their context notes and space to write your own version. Check the promises and contact routes before you use it.

The examples work with different website chatbots. These resources also cover customer reviews and a separate subject: how a business appears in search answers.
